Ferbane/Belmont v Skehana
Moystown GAA Pitch
Sunday November 5th
in memory of Michael 'Birdie' Melia Senior
Michael 'Birdie' Melia Senior's family has organised a charity hurling match in his memory to raise funds for the Asthma Society of Ireland.
"My father suffered from asthma all his life and was a big follower of Belmont hurling club. So I thought what better way to remember him than a hurling match between his favourite hurling club (Ferbane/Belmont) and my adopted club (Skehana) to raise awareness about asthma" said Michael Melia Jr, Michael's son and one of the organisers of the Michael 'Birdie' Melia Sr Memorial Cup.
This is the first year of the Michael 'Birdie' Melia Sr Memorial Cup and will take place in Moystown GAA pitch, Belmont at 3pm on Sunday November 5th. The two under 10 teams involved are connected to the Melia family as Mike Jr now coaches the hurling team in Skehana. There will be a cup presentation at the end of the match as well as a raflle for many great prizes from local sponsors.
Kevin Kelly, Advocacy and Communications Manager of the Asthma Society, says “I want to thank the Melia family for organising this event for the Asthma Society of Ireland. It is a lovely way to remember Michael Melia Senior. The proceeds from this event and events throughout the year go towards providing asthma education for asthma patients and healthcare professionals, to help combat the 90% of preventable asthma deaths.”
In Offaly and Galway there are 12,833 school children with asthma. This match will help raise awareness about asthma among the players and their parents. It is important that parents and coaches know about asthma as 10% of kids in Ireland have the chronic condition. Asthma doesn't have to prevent a child taking part in sports nor stop them dreaming of becoming an All-Ireland winner in the future.
Head down to Moystown GAA club, Belmont, Offaly this Sunday to watch the first Michael 'Birdie' Melia Sr Memorial Cup match. It is €5 per car with raffle tickets costing only €2 per strip or €5 for 3. All proceeds will go to the Asthma Society of Ireland.
If you can't make it down this Sunday but still would like to donate in Michael's memory, you can donate online or donate over the phone by calling 01 817 8886.
