Parents/Carers programme“I found it most useful to be able to discuss issues with other parents and to get simple answers to questions. I also liked the in depth knowledge of the nurse” (Dublin Participant – Dec 2015)
In our 2015-2020 strategic plan we made a commitment to support parents and carers of children with asthma. In 2015, we successfully engaged with parents and carers of children with asthma through pilot educational peer support evenings.
Following the successful evaluation of this programme we are progressing this work by engaging with groups from local communities through extended educational peer support groups.
This exciting new programme aims to engage, empower and support parents/carers and to allow a space for peer support. There is also an element of personal development/advocacy built into the programme whereby we are encouraging participants to tell their asthma story (in print or otherwise as they wish). Through this programme we aim to create a network of peer support groups for parents/carers of children with asthma across Ireland
The four week (12 hour) programme is delivered by Asthma Nurse Specialists. All participants receive a free asthma management pack containing information materials and devices. This programme aims to improve parents/carers skills and confidence in managing their child’s asthma. The programme is interactive and engaging and participant led.
