Hero Banner

Politicians are elected to represent the people in their communities. They listen when their constituents speak up. That’s why your voice matters.

By contacting your local TDs, you’re helping ensure that asthma is seen as a national health priority. The Asthma Society of Ireland’s Pre-Budget Submission was developed with input from people with asthma and healthcare professionals all over Ireland.

It outlines practical, cost-effective measures that can save lives, reduce pressure on our health service, and improve the quality of life for the 450,000 people with asthma. But to make that happen, we need your support.

Emailing your TD shows that voters care about this issue. It shows that investment in asthma must be part of Budget 2026. Real change starts with political will, and political will starts with people like you.

Step 1: Copy and customise

Copy the text below into the body of your email. It can be sent as is, or you can customise it to reflect your personal experience of asthma.

Top tips:

  1. Customising the email by explaining your connection to asthma, why this matters to you and any relevant experiences related to your/your loved one’s asthma will help make a stronger impression on the TD.
  2. TDs are more likely to read and act on correspondence from people who live in their constituency. Including a postal address helps the TD or their team verify that the sender is a local voter, and therefore someone they represent directly.
  3. Sample subject line: Show you care about the 450,000 people in Ireland with asthma in Budget 2026.

Dear Deputy,

I am writing to you as your constituent and as someone who cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of the 450,000 people in Ireland with asthma.

I am asking you to support the Asthma Society of Ireland’s 2026 Pre-Budget Submission, Backing Every Breath, Building Better Care, which outlines practical, cost-effective steps that will reduce asthma deaths, ease pressure on frontline services, and improve the quality of life for people with asthma in your constituency. The Asthma Society will be presenting their Budget 2026 recommendations in the AV room of Leinster House this World Lung Day, Thursday 25 September, from 9:00am-10:00am. Your attendance to that event is important; it shows that you care.

Asthma is a long-term, potentially life-threatening illness that affects people of all ages. Despite its prevalence, asthma is often overlooked in national health policy – and the consequences are serious. In 2022, 87 people died from asthma, giving Ireland one of the highest asthma death rates in the EU. Our asthma hospitalisation rates continue to exceed the EU average. This is not inevitable. With the right political will, we can change this.

The Asthma Society has met with the Minister for Health and proposed the following key actions:
– Fully subsidise Maintenance and Reliever Therapy inhalers (the new gold standard in asthma treatment) on a phased basis;
– Commission and publish an Irish national review of asthma deaths, similar to that conducted in the UK in 2014;
– Greenlight the Future of Registries Taskforce scoping exercise to develop a standardised framework for patient registries, using severe asthma as a proof-of-concept case study, and
– Create and fill an Advanced Nurse Practitioner post in every severe asthma clinic in the country that doesn’t currently have one.

These are realistic and urgently needed proposals. I hope you will raise these issues with your colleagues in Government and advocate for asthma to be prioritised in Budget 2026.

Sincerely,

[Your full name and address]

Step 2: Find and contact your TDs

Click on your region below to find a list of TDs in your constituency. Copy and paste the email addresses into the ‘To’ field of your email.

You can send one email to all your local TDs at once, or send them individually – personalised emails often get better responses.

Please include the Asthma Society of Ireland (anna.bourke@asthmasociety.ie) in the ‘CC’ field of your email. This helps us track how many people are taking action. It’s a simple way to show the strength of support for better asthma care, and helps us measure the campaign’s impact.

Step 3: Go the extra mile - Share on social media

Once you’ve contacted your TDs, help spread the word by sharing our campaign on social media. The more people who take part, the louder our collective voice becomes.
