About the Asthma Society of Ireland

We are the voice for asthma patients and their families.

Asthma rates are high in Ireland - around 380,000 people currently have asthma, one in ten children and one in thirteen adults. While it can develop at any stage of life, it is most frequently an early onset disease. One in five children will experience it in early childhood and about half of these will grow out of it. 890,000 people in Ireland experience asthma at some stage of their life.

However, for the remainder, it is a challenging life-long chronic disease to manage. We know that people with asthma face challenges such as keeping their symptoms under control, avoiding triggers in everyday life, getting access to the right treatment, and paying high prices for medication compared to some other European countries.

Every four minutes someone in Ireland visits an Emergency Department with asthma. Ireland had the second highest rate of asthma hospital discharges in Western Europe in 2016. One person dies every six days as a result of their asthma. Compared to 14 other European countries, Ireland had the highest death rate from asthma in 2015.

We fight asthma with every breath - our vision is for every person with asthma to live a full life, symptom-free.
